Reusable Friendlier containers at UBC Food Services Hero | Harvest Market in Brock Commons
UBC Food Services’ efforts to eliminate single-use containers from retail and residence dining halls were recently featured in UBC News: The retirement of the single-use cup: Inside UBC’s shift to a circular campus.
Since last spring, you may have noticed blue Friendlier reusable food and beverage containers at UBC Food Services locations across campus and AMS food and beverage locations in the AMS Nest.
A key contributor to UBC’s Climate Action Plan 2030 and Zero Waste plan, the Friendlier program replaces single-use containers with a container deposit and refund system. To date, over 177,000 containers have been returned, diverting more than 10,000 kilograms of waste from the landfill.
This program is part of Food Services’ wider climate action and sustainability efforts, which include prioritizing local food and plant-forward eating, reducing the amount of red meat and dairy on menus, and offering zero waste catering with Sage.
Thank you to the retail team in UBC Food Services for their work rolling out Friendlier across campus, educating customers about the program and making it a success.
