“Kendall joined the front desk team in 1985—think of the impact he has made for staff and students in that time. Kendall’s calm and steady presence, his commitment to helping people, and doing our work in the best way possible made up the fabric of Kendall’s time at UBC. He was always looking for ways to improve how we do things so that the whole team could benefit. Jonathan Turner
Jonathan Turner
Compliance Officer, Parking
Learn more about Jonathan
“If there’s one person on campus who’s probably been here longer than most of the buildings, it’s Jon Turner. Jon first joined the Parking team in 1985, and he’s pretty much done it all — from manning the old parking booths to keeping the roads safe as a Parking Compliance Officer. Chances are, you’ve seen Jon directing traffic at some of UBC’s biggest events — from concerts and Apple Fest to Student Congregation, where the Ceremonies department specifically requests Jon to oversee the VIP parking area. (When an entire department asks for you by name, you know you’re doing something right.) Jon seems to know just about everyone at UBC — and if you’ve ever met him, he’s probably made you laugh. In fact, if Jon hasn’t cracked a joke when you crossed paths… are you sure you actually met him? Thank you, Jon, for decades of laughs, hard work, and legendary service. Campus wouldn’t be the same without you — and neither would our punchlines!” — Roberto Albertini, Operations Manager, Parking Congratulations Jonathan!

Juliana Campbell
Carmen Alarcon
Parking Services Centre Coordinator, Parking
Learn more about Carmen
“If UBC Parking had a “Customer Service Hall of Fame,” Carmen Alarcon would be in it — probably laughing the whole way to the podium. Carmen joined UBC way back in 1990 and has been helping our campus community ever since. Over the years, she’s worn many hats and helped thousands of students, faculty, staff, and visitors get their UBCcards, track down lost treasures in our Lost & Found, and sort out their parking needs (sometimes all in the same day!) You may remember her from the old parkade booth days, or maybe you crossed paths at the GSAB building. For the past decade, you’ve likely found her smiling and solving problems at the Access Desk in the Bookstore — and if you did, chances are you also heard that signature Carmen giggle that instantly makes any parking problem seem a little less stressful. Carmen isn’t just friendly — she’s a walking encyclopedia of parking knowledge and one of the reasons our department runs as smoothly as it does. Thank you, Carmen, for more than three decades of laughter, kindness and expertise.” — Roberto Albertini, Operations Manager, Parking Congratulations Carmen!

Betty Nielson
Betty Nielson
Supervisor, Food Services
Learn more about Betty
“Betty has worked with UBC Food Services for 35 years. Betty started working in the bake shop in residence and then over the years worked in almost all areas in food services. We could go thru all of the locations but we believe only Starbuck’s and Booster Juice have not been part of Betty’s food service journey. Betty has always been the first one to speak her mind but also builds a great repour with the faculty and students. Soon after we opened Mercante Betty worked as a sales attendant and had a great repour with the international students, joking and making them feel like Mercante was there home. A lot of the students made Mercante their dinner and lunch spot a few times a week for the great food but also to be able to chat with Betty. 12 years later Betty is back at Mercante as a supervisor and still provides the friendly family customer service that the staff and students have grown to love. Betty loves to spend time with her family and go to BC Lions games. Congratulations on 35 years!” Jody Ropas, Retail Operations Manager, Food Services Congratulations Betty!
