Thank you for your interest in the SHCS Outstanding Contribution Awards! These awards are a great opportunity to help recognize the amazing work that is performed by members of the SHCS team.

Any active (i.e., scheduled and working) SHCS Vancouver employee, supervisor, manager, or director is eligible to nominate another active employee of SHCS in one of the following awards categories.

Click the award name for the description and criteria.

Outstanding Contribution Award

Recipients of the Outstanding Contribution Award might make a singularly extraordinary contribution to SHCS or they might make impactful everyday contributions.

Among other great qualities, they have an incredible work ethic, are highly productive, regularly go above and beyond, and are collaborative, supportive, and trustworthy colleagues who inspire through action.

Through their approach to work, their outlook, their conduct, and their influence they make SHCS a better place to work.

Criteria

  • Excel in their area of work, regularly taking initiative and going above and beyond their job description.
  • Provide a consistently high level of service to their customers, clients, and/or stakeholders.
  • Influence colleagues to positively contribute to the workplace in meaningful ways.
  • Improve the value, efficiency, and sustainability of the services they provide.
  • Enrich the workplace and help create a respectful, understanding, and inclusive workplace culture.
  • Exhibit a solutions-oriented approach to their work, often finding novel or creative ways to address a problem, issue, or situation.
  • Embody the vision/mission and values of the UBC, SHCS, and departmental strategic plans (as applicable).
Outstanding Contribution in Sustainability Award

Recipients of the Outstanding Contribution in Sustainability Award might make sustainability, climate, or environmental contributions at UBC or in the wider community. Either way, we want to recognize them.

These employees are sustainability and environmental champions, although they might be the strong but silent type – and only those closest to them would know about their efforts.

This person could be a Child Care or Residence Life staff member integrating sustainability education into their programming; they could be a Food Services staff member whose passion for plant-based cooking goes beyond residence dining; they could be a housekeeper who is also a weekend beekeeper. They lead by example and inspire others to move toward a more sustainable lifestyle.

Criteria

  • Excel in their area of work, regularly taking initiative and going above and beyond their job description.
  • Led or contributed to new sustainability practices or initiatives, at or outside of UBC, that align with UBC’s strategic plan, specifically “Strategy 3: Thriving Communities – support the ongoing development of sustainable, healthy and connected campuses and communities.” (UBC’s Strategic Plan, pg. 42)
  • Regularly prioritize sustainability concepts in their decision-making processes.
  • Incorporate sustainability practices into their daily work/life.
  • Influence their colleagues and community through their actions.
  • Embody the vision/mission and values of the UBC, SHCS, and departmental strategic plans (as applicable).
Outstanding Contribution in Community Leadership Award

Recipients of the Outstanding Contribution in Community Leadership Award are the social connectors in our midst, the staff who bring people together, who build community at work and beyond, often volunteering their time for the benefit of their colleagues, friends, families, and communities.

They might be the person who regularly gathers friends and colleagues for power walks at lunch, coordinates a surprise gift to celebrate a co-worker’s milestone, or regularly volunteers their time and skills for an important cause.

Criteria

  • Excel in their area of work, regularly taking initiative and going above and beyond their job description.
  • Display a unique commitment to enriching and enhancing their community at UBC and beyond.
  • Devote time and energy to the ongoing development of thriving communities, in particular through attention to the social and cultural aspects of community.
  • Influence members of their communities to get involved in community activities, events, and initiatives – and actively support their ongoing involvement.
  • Embody the vision/mission and values of the UBC, SHCS, and departmental strategic plans (as applicable).

Later this winter, recipients will be announced in several SHCS communications, plus they will get a certificate acknowledging their award and an opportunity to celebrate and be recognized with colleagues and SHCS/VPS leadership.

This awards program grew out of our unit’s People Plan, which identified an opportunity, based on direct feedback from staff, for increased recognition of staff contributions to their department, SHCS, UBC, and the wider community.

Submission deadline: Thursday, February 3, 2022 (11:59 pm)

FAQs

Who is eligible?

Any active, current SHCS Vancouver employee (i.e., scheduled and working) is eligible to nominate or be nominated for the Outstanding Contribution Awards.

This eligibility includes staff at all levels of the organization, from Bookstore, Campus Mail, Child Care, Conferences and Accommodation, Facilities and Building Services, Food Services, Parking, Student Housing, or any SHCS support department (IT, Marcom, Purchasing, Finance, Payroll, OHS, and HR, etc.).

UBC Okanagan SHCS employees are eligible to nominate Okanagan colleagues in the UBCO Staff Awards of Excellence, but they are also welcome to nominate a UBC Vancouver colleague for an Outstanding Contribution Award.

How are recipients selected?

Following the nomination deadline, the OCA Committee will shortlist eligible candidates. The SHCS leadership team (departmental directors) and the Associate Vice-President, SHCS, will select the OCA recipients.

One award will be given out annually for each category; however, if multiple submissions of a similarly high quality are received, at the selection committee’s discretion, a maximum of 3 recipients may be selected.
