Through the SHCS Outstanding Contribution Awards, we recognize employees in our unit who make extraordinary contributions at UBC and beyond.
This year we received many wonderful nominations. Thank you to everyone who nominated one of their incredible colleagues.
While it was challenging to select from all of the outstanding nominees, we are pleased to announce the following four recipients of this year’s Outstanding Contribution Awards.
Outstanding Contribution Award

Nominated by Colin Moore, Director, Food Services
“It has been an honour to learn from Loriann for 11 years and I am thrilled she has been recognized as an SHCS Outstanding Contribution Award winner. Loriann demonstrates the SHCS Food Services’ Vision and understands the profound impact the first year dining has on the student experience at UBC.” — Colin Moore, Director, Food Services
Congratulations Loriann; your work in SHCS is amazing!
From Loriann's Nomination
“While Loriann’s job is to provide about 15,000 meals a day to first-year students (a daunting task!), Loriann goes well beyond that, caring for her student, staff and faculty customers like they are her own family. In her 32 years Loriann has been responsible for the care of over 100,000 first-year student first impressions.
“You will find Loriann in her Residence Dining rooms every day connecting with her customers and her employees. These hundreds of daily, brief yet meaningful interactions are the magic that Loriann brings to her job.
“The most significant improvement that demonstrates Loriann’s commitment to improving the UBC experience was in fall 2022 when she launched All Access Dining in all three of the dining rooms. In 2020, Loriann recognized the current dining program was in trouble. Transactions were in decline and students were demanding better value and a more sustainable program. Loriann understood that the foundation of the program and entire value proposition had to change. She started exploring trends and best practices, connecting with her peers and visiting other universities. She helped develop the solution to launch All Access Dining in all three dining rooms.
“She helped to create the meal plan, manage extensive renovations, hire hundreds of employees and ultimately be ready to launch the program in the fall of 2022. This change transformed the program making it the most sustainable, inclusive and one of the most well-respected dining programs in the world. The results of Loriann’s new meal plan have been extraordinary!”

Nominated by Linda Fong, Early Childhood Educator, Child Care
“Ena is a trailblazer. She amazes me daily with her strength and her ability to overcome challenges. She has guided our child care teams to move beyond tokenistic gestures of recognition or inclusion to meaningfully change our practices and ways of being here and now with each other and with children and families.” — Karen Vaughan, Director, Child Care
Congratulations Ena; your work in SHCS is extraordinary!
From Ena's Nomination
“Enalyne Point became our Indigenous Relations and Engagement Pedagogist in 2021, but she was our colleague in the field of early childhood education many years beforehand. Her role was to support and to provide guidance to every centre on how to decolonize the space and to begin the conversation on how to Indigenize the curriculum to our workplaces.
“When she first began her role as our pedagogist she provided weekly informational Indigenous Insights newsletters full of information for educators to better understand First Nations cultures and the impact of Residential Schools.
“I know many of our centres have been impacted positively by her knowledge and experience of First Nations cultures and what Enalyne does is provide a safe space for us to learn.
“She has developed an Indigenous Lending Library in her office and her door is always open to those who wish to learn with an open heart! She provides workshops on Indigenous Cultural Sensitivity, Tea Talks and Good Medicine Walks.
“I have experienced her willingness to give of her personal time in teaching me about the indigenous plants and trees around UBC and when she was available to join our children on walks around UBC while at work.
“She has gone beyond her job description and seeks to bring awareness to all regarding the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and National Indigenous Peoples Day.”
— Linda Fong, Early Childhood Educator, Child Care
Outstanding Contribution Award in Sustainability

Nominated by David Speight, Executive Chef and Culinary Director, Food Services
“Amanda’s dedication to our Food Vision and Values is truly inspiring. She consistently goes above and beyond to promote sustainable food practices, leading with passion, innovation and integrity. Her commitment drives positive change, fostering a healthier, more sustainable future for our community. Amanda is an outstanding leader and advocate for meaningful impact.” — David Speight, Executive Chef and Culinary Director, Food Services
Congratulations Amanda; your work in SHCS is remarkable!
From Amanda's Nomination
“Amanda has done a fantastic job at leading and managing the kitchen at Feast and has delivered an excellent residence dining food experience to our students on budget.
“Amanda consistently brings a positive focus to our Food Vision and Values. She has worked hard to support our existing initiatives and consistently brings new ideas forward to help advance our organizational goals.
“Amanda has embraced and advanced our commitment to offering an abundance of high-quality, plant-based menu items at Feast. This is especially significant as her background consists of BBQ cooking which is meat-centric. She has challenged herself to be open-minded and learn new techniques to support our values.
“This year she has been researching certifications to help us better understand which businesses have a focused approach to the ethical treatment of animals in the food system. This will help us decide which businesses to purchase animal proteins from in the future.
“Amanda has also been a great supporter of local foods at UBC. She has supported our local spotlight businesses with great enthusiasm and creates a positive environment for our small-scale local food businesses.
“We are grateful to have Amanda leading the culinary team at Feast!”
— David Speight, Executive Chef and Culinary Director, Food Services
Outstanding Contribution Award in Community Leadership

Nominated by Mike McGhee, Manager, Communications, SHCS
“Erin, your commitment and support of UBC, SHCS and of the AVP Office is remarkable and so award-worthy. The work you do to contribute to an outstanding workplace for all in SHCS is appreciated by many staff across the unit. Your kindness, compassion, intelligence and ‘let’s get it done’ attitude is inspiring and incredibly helpful. Thank you for your hard work, your dedication and, more personally, for your friendship and support.” — Andrew Parr, Associate Vice-President, SHCS
Congratulations Erin; your work in SHCS is incredible!
From Erin's Nomination
“Erin Harley is an incredible colleague and asset to SHCS and its departments. I have seen and been a recipient of her commitment, care, authenticity and generosity first-hand. Every time we get to work on a project, it’s a pleasure to work with her, and I am 100% confident that we’re going to do our best work, collegially, humbly and for all the right reasons—the betterment of our workplace and in support and recognition of our colleagues.
“Erin has been an integral leader in every single SHCS and OWC event or initiative, for roughly a decade, and she remains a fundamental and critical leader on the OWC.
“And when it comes to flagship events, such as the Winter Festival, Staff Appreciation BBQ or Awards Reception, her community leadership truly shines, as she brings incredible creativity, care and attention to making these events fun and meaningful for staff and coordinates OWC members and other volunteers. Every year, Erin pours everything into making these events a success and making them higher quality and more engaging for our colleagues across the unit.
“Through it all she takes immense responsibility for the success of these events—more than I’ve seen from any other staff member, not just in SHCS, but in the numerous other areas of UBC where I’ve worked.
“Everything she does points toward that north star—to celebrate, acknowledge and reward our colleagues for their work.”
— Mike McGhee, Manager, Communications, Student Housing and Community Services
