Welcome to October, everyone! Now that we’re settling into the routine of the fall term, I’d like to share with you some of the projects and initiatives that fill my days, including Exchange residence, news from Child Care Services, UBC Okanagan Food Services, and more! — Andrew

On Thursday, September 19, 2019, members of the UBC community and beyond attended the official opening ceremony of Exchange, UBC’s newest residence and now home to 650 students.

SHHS is currently participating in a pilot for UBC’s new occupational first aid program, which will launch later this year to provide all UBC staff, faculty and student staff with dedicated, professional first aid support.

From excellent films and food to guided campus tours and thought-provoking discussions, during October 22–28 our student residents experienced Ignite: Indigenous Insight Week. Ignite was coordinated by Sarah Ling, Project Manager – Indigenous Initiatives in collaboration with Residence Life student leaders and SHHS staff.

With the weather getting worse and the days getting darker, it’s a good time to remind ourselves about pedestrian safety.

The Exchange Residence at the corner of Wesbrook Mall and Student Union Boulevard is well on its way to completion and is expected to open in mid-2019. Check out some photos of the in-progress building and learn a bit more about it!

On September 12, 2018, artist Mehrdad Rahbar unveiled his sculpture When Women Rise at Marine Drive Residence.

This summer, we renovated and rebranded the Totem Park dining room as Feast! It’s got a great new menu, and the servery has a whole new look.

Every August, our incoming Residence Life student staff members come together for Advisor Orientation, a two-week training program to set them up for success in the year to come.

SHHS is one team on two campuses, with lots of room for unique programs and initiatives – like the UBC Okanagan Emergency First Response Team (UBCEFRT). Learn more about this great program started by Okanagan RLM Dan Smith.

It’s not every food service operation that needs to feed a vibrant, young population each one of its meals, every day during an exciting, sometimes stressful, and transformative 8-month period.
