Later this year, Risk Management Services will be launching a new first aid program across UBC to both create a safer and healthier workplace environment and to align with WorkSafeBC regulations. Once the program is fully launched, all UBC staff, faculty and student staff will have a dedicated team of UBC first aid professionals responding to first aid calls on a 24/7 basis.

In preparation, we will be running a pilot for the staff program within Student Housing & Hospitality Services starting Monday, July 15.  Building Operations will also be running a pilot at the same time.

What to do in the event of a first aid situation

  1. Call 2-4444 from any UBC landline or 604-822-4444 from a cellphone
  2. Explain the situation and request first aid
  3. First aid support will be dispatched to your location

When should an employee call 604-822-4444?

  • Call for any first aid issue;
  • Call for UBC Employees only (faculty, staff and student workers)
  • Call 24-hours a day, 7 days a week.

When is the first aid team available?

During the pilot, the UBC Occupational First Aid team will be available Monday to Friday, 7 am–7 pm. Outside of those hours, contact the same number and first aid support will be provided by Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services (VFRS).

Program benefits

There are a number of benefits of this new program. One of these is the simplicity of the service. In the event of a first aid situation, unit managers and/or supervisors can act quickly to provide care and remain compliant with WorkSafeBC regulations by simply calling one phone number.

Managers/Supervisors: a memo was circulated in early-July. Please ensure that you have cascaded this information to members of your team by printing and posting this information on staff bulletin boards and by sharing the information verbally with front line staffIt is important that all SHHS staff are aware of the changes to their first aid support.

For questions, comments and feedback during the pilot, please contact Dustin Szeto, UBC First Aid Program Advisor at Risk Management Services, at 604-822-2932.
