On Thursday, June 6, 2024, the Food Services culinary team, in collaboration with the Outstanding Workplace Committee (OWC), hosted a Wreck Beach shoreline cleanup.
The cleanup coincided with Ocean Week Canada (June 1–9, 2024) and World Oceans Day (June 8, 2024). A Food Services Vision and Values project, the event was a great opportunity to help clean up and connect with a local marine environment and help raise awareness about the importance of fostering and preserving healthy ecosystems and marine food systems.
During the cleanup, staff collected 18.2 kilograms (40.1 pounds) of trash, including clothing, cigarette butts, glass bottles and cans, cardboard drink packaging, food packaging, rusty nails and glass.
Thanks to Chef Hoang Nguyen and the OWC for organizing this event—and to all the volunteers who joined the cleanup crew!
“Our shoreline is a precious natural resource that supports diverse ecosystems, provides recreational opportunities and enhances the beauty of our surroundings. By participating, I hope to inspire others to recognize the importance of protecting our natural habitats and to foster a collective sense of responsibility.” — Hoang Nguyen, Sous Chef, Sage Catering
