On June 7, 2022, xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) and UBC held the official naming and opening ceremony for tə šxʷhəleləm̓s tə k̓ʷaƛ̓kʷəʔaʔɬ (The Houses of the Ones Belonging to the Saltwater), to celebrate the residence and honour the six hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓-language names gifted by xʷməθkʷəy̓əm.

The ceremony took place in the beautiful new courtyard between tə šxʷhəleləm̓s tə k̓ʷaƛ̓kʷəʔaʔɬ and Walter H. Gage student residences, and it included honoured speakers and participants from both xʷməθkʷəy̓əm and UBC, including several student representatives.

In spring 2021, the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm Nation generously gifted the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓-language name for UBC’s newest residence, tə šxʷhəleləm̓s tə k̓ʷaƛ̓kʷəʔaʔɬ, along with its five house names. Learn more about, and how to pronounce, the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) names at tə šxʷhəleləm̓s tə k̓ʷaƛ̓kʷəʔaʔɬ.
