Remembering Esperanza de Guzman

We are saddened to share the news that after 25 years of service, Esperanza de Guzman, a dedicated and hardworking Sales Attendant in Residence Dining (Food Services) passed away on February 5, 2024. We extend our deepest condolences to Esperanza’s family and wish them comfort during this difficult time.

Esperanza, known affectionately as “Espie”, who had recently retired from Food Services, “touched the lives of so many students, staff and guests at UBC over her career,” says Loriann McGowan, Associate Director, Residence Dining. “We were truly blessed to know her and be part of her life. She was truly one of a kind and will be deeply missed.”

“Over the years,” Jane Sunwoo, from Open Kitchen and Hero, shares, “Esperanza has provided service to many students, staff and summer conference guests from all over the world. Her hospitality extended to her friends and family members who she enjoyed hosting at her home and cooking and sharing her foods with them—a hobby that aligned well with a career in Food Services.”

With many friends, colleagues and several family members in Food Services and SHCS, Esperanza leaves behind a significant legacy at UBC.

The family shares that no service will be held at this time. If you would like to share a message or memory, please visit the Remembering Esperanza de Guzman Kudoboard.
